External and internal dimensions, door opening, floor area, volume and weight of 8ft, 10ft, 20ft, 40ft and 40ft High Cube containers — and what each size is used for.

Container size

Converted containers use shipping-container bodies built to ISO standard sizes, so their dimensions are almost the same everywhere. The figures below are typical; the inside of a converted unit is slightly smaller because the walls are insulated and panelled, the floor is covered and a ceiling is installed. Each product page lists its exact dimensions.

FAQ

Questions about container sizes

What are the dimensions of a 20 ft container in meters?

A 20 ft container measures about 6.06 × 2.44 × 2.59 m outside and about 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.39 m inside, with roughly 13.9 m² of floor space.

What is the difference between a 40ft and a 40ft High Cube container?

Length and width are the same. A High Cube is one foot (about 30 cm) taller: about 2.90 m high outside and 2.69 m inside, so the space feels roomier.

Which size suits an office?

A 20ft container (about 13.9 m²) usually suits a small office with a few desks. For a larger team or a meeting room, choose a 40ft (about 28 m²) or combine several units.

Is the inside of a converted container the same size as a standard container?

Slightly smaller, because the walls are insulated and panelled, the floor is covered and a ceiling is installed. Each product page lists its exact internal dimensions.

How much do 20ft and 40ft containers weigh?

An empty 20ft container weighs about 2.2 t and a 40ft about 3.7 t. Converted units are heavier because of the added inner walls, flooring and fittings, so they are unloaded with a crane or crane truck.
