Container vs brick building: which costs less?
Compare the estimated cost and build time of a converted-container space with a conventional brick building of the same size.
These are rough per-m² estimates to help you compare, not a quote. Actual costs depend on the design, location and specification — request a quote for exact figures.

Container vs brick building
| Aspect | Converted container | Brick building |
|---|---|---|
| Build time | About 1–4 weeks, mostly done in the workshop | About 3–6 months on site, weather-dependent |
| Work on site | Short: simple pad or foundation, unloading and connections | Long: foundation, structure, walls and roof |
| Relocatable | Yes — lifted and shipped to a new site | No |
| Expansion | Add units, stack or join them | Requires renovation |
| Value after use | Can still be resold or rented out | Tied to the land and building |
FAQ
Questions about container costs
Is a container always cheaper than a brick building?
Not always. For small to medium buildings needed quickly or that you may want to move, a converted container usually saves time and money. For large, permanent multi-storey buildings, conventional construction can be more efficient.
Why is a container quicker to build?
Framing, insulation, electrics and finishing are done in the workshop while the site is being prepared, so on-site work is limited to a simple foundation, unloading and connections.
Do containers get hot?
A container with insulated walls and roof, ventilation and a correctly sized air conditioner is comfortable. Work out the AC you need with the AC calculator.
